We have exciting plans for next year, including a mentoring program, monthly meetings, and a networking listserv for women from the Duke Political Science Department, past and present. Starting in the spring, we'll work to include women from other social sciences at Duke. Contact Harriet, Katie, or me for more information.About WNSS
WNSS is a group designed to support each other as we face the particular challenges of being a women
in graduate school and in the field of political science.
APSA has identified the "leaking pipeline," wherein women drop out of graduate school or choose not to enter
academic jobs after receiving a PhD, as a major reason that the percentage of women in full time faculty
positions has stalled in recent years. Making graduate school a more positive experience for women
by mentoring and supporting each other is one of the specific recommendations of the APSA report.
While WNSS is specifically aimed at supporting women in graduate school, ideally the network we develop will
continue once we leave to Duke to move to faculty positions (or the next steps in our lives). We envision this
group as a support to each other professionally as well as socially, potentially leading to future collaborative work.
Moving forward, in addition to working with political science graduate students, we would like to organize
events with faculty, undergraduates, and women in other social sciences. We would very much like your ideas
on what to do next and how to make WNSS work best.
